PARTS Challenge – Put Blue Block on Red Disc

While visiting the mini maker faire last month at OMSI, I discovered a local robotics club called PARTS (Portland Area Robotics Society) and managed to attend their most recent meeting – which are all held on the first Saturday of each month.

It was perfect timing too, for two reasons: First, the meeting dealt with migrating from the Arduino ecosystem to straight up AVR and ARM development which is something I’ve been extremely interested in learning more about. Secondly, PARTS happens to be running a challenge to build an autonomous robot that can move about a table surface, without falling off, detect a blue colored block and move it onto a red disc that is also somewhere on the table.

The challenge fits in perfectly with my plan to move over to using ROS and vision based navigation for NavBot so for the next few months the “Blue Block Challenge” will be the focus of my work.
